Meet Raymond McDonald

Raymond McDonald is the photographer and guide behind The Aurora Pursuit — a refined, small-group aurora experience shaped by patience, preparation, and a deep obsession for Yellowknife’s northern sky.

After years spent photographing the aurora across the Northwest Territories, Raymond created The Aurora Pursuit for guests who want more than a standard viewing tour. Each expedition is guided through the eyes of a photographer, with attention to light, timing, composition, safety, and the quiet moments that make the northern lights unforgettable.

A Photographer’s Pursuit

The Aurora Pursuit began with Raymond’s own connection to the northern lights — countless nights spent waiting, watching, and learning how the aurora moves across the sky. What started as a personal photographic pursuit became a way to share that experience with others in a more intimate and intentional way.

Today, each expedition is designed around small groups, open skies, and the understanding that the aurora cannot be rushed. The experience is not only about seeing the lights, but about being present when the north reveals itself.

Yellowknife, Known by Night

Raymond spent years living in Yellowknife and continues to return to the landscapes, roads, skies, and viewing conditions that shaped his aurora work.

1,000+ Aurora Nights Captured

With more than 1,000 aurora photographs captured, Raymond brings a photographer’s understanding of timing, movement, exposure, and composition into every expedition.

Small by Design

he Aurora Pursuit is intentionally limited to preserve mobility, comfort, and a more personal experience beneath the northern sky.

Guided With Intention

Every pursuit is shaped by preparation, restraint, and respect for the conditions of the night.

Raymond guides with a calm, safety-minded approach — choosing locations, reading the sky, and creating space for guests to experience the aurora without crowds or rush.
